Mascalucia, above Catania and below the volcano
Villa Rita stands in Mascalucia, a quiet town on the southern slopes of Mount Etna, where the air is cooler than on the coast and the view runs from the volcano down to the Ionian sea. The historic centre of Catania is around 12 km away, and Catania Fontanarossa Airport is roughly 17 km from the gate, so a rental car makes the whole of eastern Sicily easy to reach.
From here you can be on the Etna trails in under an hour, in the baroque streets of Catania in twenty minutes, or in Taormina, Acireale and the Riviera dei Ciclopi for a day by the water. Local trattorias are a short drive away, with Artino at 1.3 km and Ristorante Trattoria Pizzeria all'Ulivo at 1.8 km, and the nearest metro stations at San Nullo and Cibali are about 10 km away.
